Across the street is a small whale sanctuary park with viewing telescopes and educational displays. The park has shade trees, picnic tables, and a shallow lagoon for swimming. There are also archaeological displays of the ancient Hawaiian fish ponds and village site. Sugar Beach is located just a couple of minutes by foot down Kihei Road, from where you can walk or run 3.5 miles along a sandy beach, passing only a few buildings. The swimming beaches of Charley Young, Kamaole I, II and III, and Keawakapu are a short drive by car into Kihei, and even better beaches are a little further south at Makena.
