Setting and natural features
The beach fronts the turquoise waters of the Pacific, offering views of the neighboring islands of Lānaʻi and Molokaʻi. Its soft golden sand transitions quickly to deeper water, creating ideal conditions for swimming and paddleboarding when surf is calm. At the northern end, Puʻu Kekaʻa (“Black Rock”)—a lava promontory—provides the best snorkeling on-site, where tropical fish and sea turtles frequent coral reefs close to shore.
History and cultural significance
Ka’anapali was developed in the 1960s as Hawaiʻi’s first master-planned resort community, setting the model for modern beachfront tourism. The site’s northern cliff, Black Rock, holds cultural importance in Hawaiian tradition as the place from which spirits of the departed were believed to leap into the next world. Each evening, a ceremonial torch lighting and cliff dive re-enacts the leap of the 18th-century chief King Kahekili.

Popular pastimes include snorkeling, parasailing, sunset sailing, and whale watching (December–April). The Ka’anapali Beachwalk, a paved oceanfront path, connects major resorts from the Hyatt Regency to the Sheraton. Nearby, Whalers Village offers shops, restaurants, and a whaling museum, while golfers frequent the Royal Ka’anapali and Ka’anapali Kai courses.

Current status
As of 2026, Ka’anapali Beach remains fully open and operational; it was not directly affected by the August 2023 Lahaina wildfire. Resorts and amenities continue to operate normally, with minor roadway repairs in progress on the Honoapiʻilani Highway leading to the area.
